At present GenAI is almost everywhere we look, its hype bubble expanding day-by-day. Its promises of enhanced productivity and efficiency have resulted in companies scrambling to invest and keep up with the latest developments.

Yet hype, as history shows, can be a double-edged sword. Every new concept, product, or service is often touted by vendors as the best thing since sliced bread. They’ll claim their product is:

• Revolutionary!

• Transformative!

• Cutting-edge!

• Innovative!

• Next-generation!

• Ground-breaking!

• Forward-thinking!

While a small percentage of them live up to the hype, many fall short, with some even flopping entirely.

So, how do we avoid getting wrapped up in the hype whirlwind? By examining past technological missteps and flops, we can learn valuable lessons and give ourselves a much-needed reality check.

Lessons from Tech's Past Failures

1. 3D Television: The Blurry Vision of Home Entertainment

Remember back in 2011 when 3D televisions were poised to revolutionise home entertainment? Sony and Samsung, amongst other major manufacturers, heavily invested in the tech, convinced we'd all be watching movies with special glasses. Yet, by 2017, the dream had fizzled, with TechCrunch declaring "3D TVs are dead.”

Why It Flopped: The need for inconvenient, special glasses, the limited availability of 3D content, and a hefty price tag outweighed any promises of slightly enhanced visual experience. Most viewers simply didn't see enough value over standard HD at the time, leading to poor sales.

2. The Metaverse: A Virtual World Still in Beta

Touted as the next evolution of the internet, the Metaverse promised an immersive digital world for socialising, efficient remote/hybrid working, and enhanced entertainment. Big tech companies such as Meta poured billions into its development, however, in 2022 they announced an eye-watering $13.7 billion loss.

Why It Flopped: To access the metaverse, new hardware was needed, which came at a high price tag. This, coupled with vague use cases, meant consumers weren’t convinced enough to invest significant time and money on participating in a virtual world. The concept never gained widespread traction, public support has waned, and it remains largely a niche pursuit.

3. Hyperloop: The Fast Track That Slowed Down

Positioned as the future of ultra-fast transportation, Hyperloop sought to transport passengers through vacuum tubes at 600+ miles per hour. Elon Musk's 2013 proposal ignited widespread excitement and attracted significant initial investment. Yet, a decade later, a commercially viable Hyperloop system remains elusive. It seems to have flopped, as have a few other Musk-backed ventures, e.g., Netscape, Zip2, Tesla Roadster.

Why It Flopped: Hyperloop faced multiple blockers, including huge infrastructure costs, safety concerns, and complex regulatory considerations. Building the vacuum tubes to span large areas became a logistical nightmare. It also lacked government backing and a clear business model, which further stalled progress. Hyperloop One, a prominent company committed to the venture, shut down in late 2023 due to financial challenges. However, other companies continue to pursue the technology. China has ambitious plans to implement hyperloop by 2035, and the technology is included in the US infrastructure bill. Test tracks do exist, but as it stands, Hyperloop still remains a futuristic concept rather than a practical reality.

4. Microsoft/Xbox Kinect: Twice the Flop

Microsoft launched Kinect in 2010, a motion controller for Xbox 360 that enables users to control games with body movements. In 2012, it also attempted expansion to Windows. Despite poor performance, Microsoft pushed it again as part of console bundles in the early days of Xbox One’s launch. Microsoft finally accepted defeat and ceased production in 2017.

Why It Flopped: The Kinect only ever had a limited library of engaging games, and it required sufficient free space in the room to use it - this presented a practical hurdle for many gamers. The original Kinect's motion tracking was inconsistent and suffered from lag, especially during fast (or more complex) movements. It had already flopped initially when it launched for the 360, but it flopped again after Microsoft forced its inclusion in a console bundle with early Xbox One models, which prompted consumer backlash.

5. Google Fiber: The Unfulfilled Promise of Gigabit Internet

Google Fiber - gigabit fiber-optic internet - was music to the ears of many who longed for faster internet speeds in the US. While Google Fiber served to demonstrate the feasibility of gigabit internet, thereby contributing to spurred infrastructure investment, its expansion into new areas was halted in 2016.

Why It Flopped: Google Fiber faced significant challenges related to high infrastructure costs, sluggish adoption rates, regulatory challenges, and difficulties with implementation and competition from established ISPs. These ultimately made widespread rapid expansion economically unfeasible for Google.

6. Amazon Fire Phone: Kindling That Just Wouldn’t Light

In 2014, Amazon ventured into the smartphone market with their Fire Phone, which didn’t land particularly well. It claimed to offer “3D capabilities” and features designed to support Amazon retail purchases. At the time, the device was widely regarded as expensive (approx. £480/$650 for the 32GB model), and it was restricted for purchase exclusively on AT&T’s network in the US. Amazon discontinued it just 15 months after its launch in June 2014.

Why It Flopped: The device lacked a clear value proposition that justified its high cost, especially when compared to other established smartphones at the time. Its “3D features” turned out to be nothing more than a gimmick and the Amazon and AT&T-centric functionality ended up putting many consumers off.

So, what can we learn from these previous examples of failed tech products?

These examples highlight a crucial lesson that is particularly pertinent in today’s age of “AI” promises: hype doesn't always result in success or return on investment. Products are often frequently rumoured, promised, or in some cases even guaranteed, yet still fail to launch, or to deliver the value many originally anticipated.

Understanding the reasons behind past tech failures—from unclear value propositions, excessively high costs, logistical and physical restrictions, technical or regulatory limitations, to lack of consumer interest and demand—can help us approach recent and upcoming GenAI (and other emerging tech) advancements with a more critical, realistic, and informed perspective.
